Bolton Library

The Bolton Library, situated in John St. Cashel, is home to a unique collection of antiquarian books – including the smallest book in the world. The books  originally belonged to Archbishop Theophilus Bolton, Archbishop  of Cashel from 1730 to 1744, who resided in the nearby Cashel Palace Hotel. The library is now housed in the Chapter House situated in the grounds of the Cathedral Church of St. Patrick’s Rock and St. John the Baptist in John Street, Cashel. The old cathedral on site is still used for the celebration of Sunday Mass, and the original roof from the Rock of Cashel was put in place here after being taken down from the Rock.

The collection contains a wide range of subjects and includes a 12th century manuscript, the Nuremnberg Chronicle and works by Dante, Swift, Calvin, Erasmus and Machiavelli. Also on display are maps and church silver.

Opening Hours: Monday – Wednesday (10.00 – 3.00pm) & Thursday (10.00 – 2.30pm) Group tours by appointment.
